POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN MOLECULAR MICROBIOLOGY AVAILABLE IN
SHEFFIELD
======================================================================
FUNCTIONS AND ASSEMBLY OF CYTOCHROME bd, A
VERSATILE BACTERIAL OXIDASE
Cytochrome bd is a highly-conserved terminal oxidase of unique
structure and composition, found in many Gram-positive and -
negative bacteria. Recently, compelling evidence has been
compiled from many laboratories indicating that, in addition to
its
function as terminal oxygen reductant, cytochrome bd is involved
in iron transport, oxidative stress resistance, stationary phase
survival and pathogenicity. The objectives are:
·to understand why cytochrome bd, but not the alternative
oxidase, cytochrome bo', is required for these functions and
·to determine the role of the ABC transporter encoded by
cydDC in cytochrome bd assembly.
Applications are invited for a three-year position to work on
this
project. You should have, or expect to obtain soon, a PhD in a
relevant biological subject, such as microbiology or
biochemistry.
Experience in molecular genetics and microbiology is essential,
as
is an ability to work interactively in a group of other
post-doctoral
researchers and post-graduate students. The salary will be on the
1A scale up to point 6, according to age and experience.
The University of Sheffield is consistently rated in the top
rank of UK Universities. The Department of Molecular
Biology and Biotechnology is large and multidisciplinary;
special strengths lie in the areas of molecular microbiology,
structural biology, and developmental and fungal genetics.
The department occupies excellent space in the main
University building (Firth Court) and (with the Department of
Biomedical Sciences) will soon be extensively refurbished
with grants totalling about £30 million.
The University is on the Western side of the city, within easy
reach of rail and road access points. The Peak National Park
lies less than five miles from the University.
This BBSRC-funded position is available immediately or at any
time
before 23 October 2000

An ICI CASE Studentship
on Computational Microrheology and Quantitative Characterisation
of
Complex Fluid Flows
====================================================================
Department of Mechanical Engineering, King's College London
Applications are invited for an ICI CASE Studentship at the
Department
of Mechanical Engineering, King's College London
(http://www.kcl.ac.uk/mecheng/). Applicants should have, or
expect to
obtain shortly, a first or upper second class degree in physics,
applied
mathematics, materials science, engineering or a related
discipline. The
studentship covers tuition fees at home/EU student level and
maintenance
allowance (please check eligibility at
http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/student/.
The project involves numerical simulations based on microscopic
process
of complex fluids under flow conditions, and measurement of both
the
velocity and the stress field of complex fluids in various flow
configurations
simultaneously and independently by state-of-the-art optical
techniques,
such as laser-Doppler anemometry, digital particle image
velocimetry,
rheo-optical analyser and other facilities available at King's.
The
project
aims to quantitatively characterise complex fluids, to evaluate
existing
constitutive models of complex fluids and to provide further
useful
insight
for their future improvement by comparing the measured velocity
and
stress
data with the results of the numerical simulations. The project
constitutes a
natural link of frontline process engineering with fundamental
scientific
problems. The student will also have an opportunity to spend a
few
months over the period of three years at the ICI Strategic
Technology
Group, ICI Technology, Wilton Centre.
Applicants can view the postgraduate prospectus at:
http://www.kcl.ac.uk/coming/postgraduate/pgp2000/contents.html
and should download a postgraduate student application form from:
http://www.kcl.ac.uk/coming/postgraduate/pgp2000/appform/index.html
and submit a completed paper copy of the form to: Ms Nicola
Nayler,
Division of Engineering, King's College London, Strand, London

Dear All,
Since the ACE-UK circulated the story about my mother's illness
(renal
failure) you expressed sympathy and intention of making a
donation. Here I
would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dr S.Chen (South
Bank
University) and all of country fellows for their sympathy and
support.
I would also like to inquiry about the possiblity of bringing my
mother
coming to the UK for treatment. Some of my friends including
British
suggested that I should try on this. I would be very grateful if
you have
similar experience and information from your friends:
(1) the possiblity for my mother to get a depdendant
visa/visiting visa (my
mother now is in Hospital in China and is weak);
(2) treatment of renal failure in the UK such as kidney
transplantation,
dialysis, etc.), the expenses, etc.

My nephew who is a high school student in Beijing is keen to
study in UK
University reading Engineering or Computer Technology. Now he is
in the
second year of high school education. His parents and I want to
know how we
and he apply for a place in University of Manchester or UMIST.
What
procedure and formality should he go through? How much will it
cost? I have
visited a few websites of the Universities. I may need to do more
but I am
eager to hear the real experience from our fellow students. I
wonder if
anyone from Mainland China who has the personal experience could
help us.
Please contact Mr. Feng by returning an e-mail to Tong Feng

Since I am in Loughborough so if anyone starts trip from
Loughborough
